Non-surgical blepharoplasty with PlexR®: differences with surgical blepharoplasty

One of the most concerning signs of facial ageing is droopy eyelids and bags. We clarify what non-surgical blepharoplasty with PlexR® is, when it is a good option and when, on the contrary, classic surgical blepharoplasty is indicated.

What is non-surgical blepharoplasty with PlexR®?

Non-surgical blepharoplasty with PlexR® (also called non-ablative medical blepharoplasty with cold plasma) is a procedure that works on the eyelids without a scalpel, without stitches and without going into the operating theatre.

Through the controlled generation of a low-energy plasma arc, gradual retraction of the upper eyelid skin is produced, slightly reducing the "tired look" sensation, mild excess skin and the small "crow's feet" wrinkles in the periocular area.

In which cases is blepharoplasty with PlexR® INDICATED?

Non-surgical blepharoplasty with PlexR® is mainly indicated for:

  • Upper eyelid with MILD or MODERATE excess skin, not very pronounced.
  • Patients looking to improve the look without undergoing surgery, due to fear, recovery time or not wanting aggressive changes.
  • Younger patients who are beginning to notice a heavy look and want early anti-ageing maintenance in the eye area.
  • Fine scars or irregularities in the eyelid area after a previous procedure.

When is PlexR® NOT enough and surgical blepharoplasty the right option?

Traditional surgical blepharoplasty is the correct option when at least one of the following is present:

  • VERY pronounced excess skin on the upper eyelid, which even interferes with the visual field.
  • Marked fatty bags on the lower eyelid, with visible herniation of orbital fat.
  • Severe laxity associated with other signs in the upper third of the face (very droopy eyebrows, etc.) that require a global plan.

In summary: PlexR® medical plasma works on skin quality; surgical blepharoplasty works on structures (excess skin, fat bags, orbicularis muscle).

How is recovery in each case?

  • Non-surgical blepharoplasty (PlexR®): redness and small scabs for 5-8 days, easily hidden with regenerative cream and photoprotector. Return to social activities in 7-10 days.
  • Surgical blepharoplasty: variable swelling and bruising for 10-21 days, with suture removal around the 5th-7th day. Return to social activities between 2 and 3 weeks.
